Project Update: Transformer Storage In NY

Project Update

A new customer reached out to us to:

  • Identify an optimal location to support prompt delivery to their site
  • Design + build a transformer pad for short-to-long term storage for an emergency transformer

The goal?

For the backup transformer to be able to be moved and placed ASAP, eliminating as many hurdles/lead time items along the way as possible.

The details + results

  • The customer gave notice to proceed with the project in October
  • It took 6 weeks from the NTP for us to complete and pad to cure, with a completion date of 11/23
  • Transformer weight without oil: 519,270 lbs
  • Transformer weight with oil: 683,160 lbs
  • Logisticus group was tasked to store the transformer at a port in NY for 5+ years and we had to build a pad that would withstand the load. Our pad construction consisted of the following-
    • Footprint= 41′ x 49′
    • Excavation of 2′ depth of native land
    • 26″ of compacted gravel to fill
    • 2′ thick concrete pour to achieve a strength of 5,500 PSI
      • Concrete consisted of #6 reinforcing single mat rebar 12″ on center
    • Oil containment pit
  • Transformer pad was completed before our deadline of 12/6
