PROJECT UPDATE: Route Improvement Work in 8 Locations Across Iowa

Sep 9, 2020 | Case Studies

PROJECT OVERVIEW

Logisticus Group was contracted for route improvement work in Central and Northwest Iowa. We took a Route Survey Report from our customer’s transportation carrier outlining 8 “issue” locations needing route improvements.

The improvements at each location varied from simple sign sleeving to tree removal from private land to the installation of rocked turning radii improvements in the Iowa Department of Transportation Right of Way. We designed turning overlays for all locations and worked with the IADOT to better understand how the DOT wanted us to go about the improvements.

SCOPE

Here’s how we completed this project:

  • We assisted the customer with inbound deliveries of components through three states Kansas, Nebraska and Iowa. Because we have prior relationships in Kansas and Iowa, we were able to perform the neccessary route improvements along the inbound route.
  • When the customer reached out to us for assistance on these deliveries, trucks were loaded in Texas but couldn’t move due to the improvements holding up permitting. This was no easy task for any of the three states, but especially Nebraska, who was not open to the customer using the first three routes reuqested and we ultimately had to go a different route than planned.
  • With the Nebraska Department of Transportation, a private contractor is not allowed to move/remove/make signs removable so we were at the mercy of their sign crews and workload.
  • We were in constant communication with NDOT and they agreed to work with us. The NDOT relocated the issue signs and granted the carrier a Heavy Haul permit to continue inbound deliveries through the state of Nebraska, en route to IOWA.

We were able to complete the job in 75 days. Our involvement and prior experience helped pull the schedule forward.

A metal signpost is bolted to a black square base, set on rocky ground. A shadow of a person taking a photo is visible on the left side of the image. Sparse grass can be seen in the background.
