The Project
In the summer and fall of 2021, our wind industry client hired us to transport 77 wind turbine tower sets, 16 complete wind turbine generators, and 20 additional partial turbine units from three origins in Kansas to a large, multi-phase wind farm in Oklahoma.
Originally, the project started out with a smaller component volume. But when other transportation partners found themselves with their hands full, Logisticus Group was able to pivot and add more components to our scope—turning this into one of our larger recent turbine delivery projects.
One of the things we pride ourselves on is expert planning & transparent communication. Not only does it keep our clients informed, the costs minimized, and our team organized, it also helps us adjust a lot easier to any curveballs.
The Challenges
Adding more components wasn’t the only change we encountered. One week from the start of the plan, we had to shift our routed delivery point from the designated project staging yard, to deliver directly to pad instead.
That meant we didn’t have a staging area within striking distance of the project. But this didn’t faze our veteran field operatives. They quickly got to work grouping trucks across our carrier base while en route to the site for receiving in real time.
Another challenge we faced was holistic on-site communication with all the involved parties. We immediately noticed that there wasn’t a dedicated system in place to keep all on-site transportation-related operations in sync, so we set up a site-wide communications app and a dedicated CB radio channel so that no one would be left in the dark.
The Takeaways
We knew it was critical to have free and clear access to the pads every day. We made it our priority to connect and communicate with the on-site civil team so we could quickly get proof rolls, pad fixes, access roads, and weather fixes done in real time.
Overall, this is a great example of why having a detailed plan and contingency is so important—especially when the project doesn’t go exactly as expected.
Open communication, in depth experience, and the ability to be flexible can all make or break the success of a project. But these are all components we take into consideration so we can deliver More Innovation and Less Risk to every client.
